UVA Student in Critical Condition after Car Accident Involving Lacrosse Player (Video)

A 20-year-old University of Virginia student is in critical condition at UVA Medical Center Monday night, after being hit while riding his bike.

The 20-year-old from New York was crossing Ivy Road when a Jeep, driven by a 21-year-old fourth year UVA men's lacrosse player, tried to turn east on Ivy and struck him.

The cyclist was not wearing a helmet, but was able to communicate with people on the scene. Police say that intersection sees a lot of traffic, but it's not particularly dangerous.

Lt. Ronnie Roberts with Charlottesville police stated, "It's a high-volume intersection, typically. Its right near the university itself where the athletic fields and so forth are located at. You've got John Paul Jones arena, U-Hall and things of that sort. So it's a pretty active area."

There's no indication alcohol or speed were factors in the accident. Police are working to determine who is at fault. Charges are pending. NBC29 details the accounts in the video below.
