Source - A standout lacrosse player at the Naval Academy was arrested and charged with assault Sunday after an incident stemming from an unpaid cab fare, police said. Midshipman Gabriel Marc Voumard, 22, of Cape May, N.J., was charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. The owner of La Union Taxi Company told 11 News he picks up fares along a strip of bars on West Street in Annapolis around last-call every weekend night. Driver Williams Del Cid said he got the worst scare of his 14-year career after he picked up the Naval Academy junior around 2 a.m. Sunday.
According to Anne Arundel County police, Del Cid picked up Voumard and another person at a bar on West Street and took them to the 1400 block of Bay Head Road. Del Cid said the trip cost $24. Neither of the two passengers had a credit card, so one of the men went inside the house to get money. Del Cid said Voumard eventually came out with only $17. "I told him it's not enough money. He went back to the home. When he came back to me a few minutes later, he came back with a knife," Del Cid said.
Voumard, who was recently named First Team All Patriot League, is suspended from the lacrosse team indefinitely but will continue to attend classes as the investigation unfolds. Navy plays Lehigh tonight at 7pm in the Patriot League quarterfinals.
