ALBANY, N.Y. – Led by 15 goals from the Thompson trio, UAlbany more than doubled last year’s offensive tally against its cross-town rival to take down Siena 19-11 on Tuesday night.

In a matchup of two Capital District rivals that are undefeated in their respective conferences, UAlbany (8-5) improved to 10-2 in the series over Siena (8-5) in the Division I era after falling to the Saints 10-9 last season.

“I thought the difference was our defense in the third quarter.  We came out and set the tone, and that gave our offense the opportunity to take over the game,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr.

Miles Thompson and Lyle Thompson each had six goals, a career-high for the latter, and Ty Thompsonhad three goals for UAlbany.  The three combined for 19 points tonight, with Miles and Lyle each having two assists, after having zero in the Siena game last season.  Blaze Riorden got the win with 13 saves in goal.

For Siena, Colin Clive scored four goals and an assist, while Richie Hurley finished with a goal and three assists.  The loss went to Tommy Cordts, who saved 12 shots.

Bennett Drake got the scoring started off a catch and shoot from Miles Thompson.  The Thompsons led the scoring the rest of the way, as at 3-2 UAlbany, Lyle Thompson scored, then Ty Thompson added two more in the final 2:03 of the quarter as the Great Danes led after the first 6-3.

The second quarter saw the offenses go back and forth, with Siena getting to within two after a Kyle Curry goal to make it 7-5 just 1:52 in.  Lyle Thompson responded with two goals in a row, to which Siena got two more to pull back within two.  Ty Thompson stopped the Siena run with a behind the back goal, followed by Lyle Thompson passing to Miles Thompson for a score to put the score at 11-7 at the break.

Miles Thompson continued the run, scoring the first two goals of the second half, then passing to John Maloney for another score.  Lyle Thompson added a soft shot past the keeper to cap a 6-0 run.  Hurley scored for Siena with 2:01 left in the third as UAlbany led 15-8 after three.

Goals by Maloney and Will Stenberg built UAlbany’s lead to 17-9 with 9:09 left to play.  Siena added two goals from Conor Prunty and Clive to pull within six with 6:47 remaining, but UAlbany sealed the game with goals from Lyle and Miles Thompson to earn the 19-11 victory.

UAlbany returns to conference play, battling Binghamton for the 1-seed in the America East Tournament at John Fallon Field on Saturday, April 26th at 7 p.m.
