The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team hosted the University of Virginia Thursday night in a scrimmage. 3,000 or so people showed up to watch the high-powered affair. The Hornets battled the defending Division I national champion Cavaliers the entire game, losing just 13-9. The Hornets led 7-6 at halftime, Max Voumard scored twice and Ben Sauer had two assists for LC, while Franc Cook had 13 saves. Mark Cockerton paced UVA with five scores and three assists.
Virginia wore White Cascades, Navy Gait pinnies and Blue Nike shorts with Orange stripe down the side. In terms of footwear they mixed it up with Nike Speed TD's and Vapors. Lynchburg stood out in their Red CPXR helmets, White UA pinnies and Black shorts.
“This was a really nice evening,” Virginia coach Dom Starsia said. “They did a really nice job of setting this up. It was a great crowd and a great atmosphere. It was a wonderful experience for our younger guys.
“I like to get my team on the bus and come on the road like this. Anything that helps to grow lacrosse in this area, I’m all for doing. I got to know when my son played for him. I said to him let us come down there.”
Virginia won 15 of 25 face-offs, held a 33-29 advantage in groundballs and had 44 shots to the Hornets 28.
The Cavaliers Mark Cockerton led all scorers with five goals. Cockerton also had three assists. Owen Van Arsdale had two goals and Rob Emery, Greg Coholan, Tyler German, Ryan Tucker, Carl Walrath and Greg Danseglio each scored once. Austin Geisler played the first 45 minutes in goal for Virginia and recorded five saves.
“We had a lot of young guys out there and I thought Lynchburg really carried the play to us early,” Starsia said. “This was a chance for them to experience what game speed is like. Lynchburg played with pretty good energy and we got knocked around a bit early. I’m just glad we responded and played a little bit better in the third.”
Max Voumard led Lynchburg with two goals. Andrew Wilfong, Pat Ohrem, Dylan Hoff, Lisicky, Manzo, Galvin and Rob Arnold each had one goal for the Hornets. LC’s Franc Cook played just shy of 41 minutes in goal and recorded 13 saves.
“It was so much fun,” Cook said. “That was one of greatest experiences of my life. I couldn’t have asked for something better. It was awesome.”
