The Piedmont College men's lacrosse team made history this weekend at PC with their first-ever competition hosting a pair of scrimmages with college club teams for a day of action this past weekend in the non-traditional segment of their 2011-12 season. Officially kicking off their campaign in early February of 2012, the Lions got their first taste of lax on the college level with club teams from the University of Georgia and Clemson coming over to play in the three-game affair on Sunday, a day that Piedmont Head Coach Pete Manderano hopes will give his team a foundation for the spring.

"I think the kids played really well, I liked their effort, overall it was a great day," said Manderano of his team's fall scrimmages. "The first game we were maybe a little nervous, but I did not think they were intimidated by anybody. It was a nice beginning. We've got a lot of work to do, but overall the coaches were pretty happy."

No scores or stats are reported with these pair of competitions per NCAA rules, but the action was reported well to the crowds who showed up to support the competitors with the bleachers at Walker Athletic Complex being full most of the day. It's the type of support that Athletic Director John Dzik had in mind when the program was first started back in the spring of 2010.

"It was a great way to introduce the sport of lacrosse to the Piedmont College community," said Dzik of the scrimmages which wrapped up PC's non-traditional segment of the season. "Our team and coaches should be very pleased with this first step. We are all excited to see the team in Intercollegiate play this spring.”

With the non-traditional segment now complete for first-year Head Coach Pete Manderano, his Lions will await the official start of their 2012 season which is set for Februrary 22nd, 2012 as the team travels to Lynchburg, VA to battle Randolph College. Piedmont's first home game will be February 29th when the Lions host Alma College for a 7:30 pm game under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex.
