BALTIMORE, June 26, 2013 — The US Lacrosse West Championships, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited, come to San Jose, Calif., Friday through Sunday. Fifty-seven boys’ and girls’ teams from seven states will compete at Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center in the only youth lacrosse tournament in the region administered by the national governing body of lacrosse.
Age divisions for the event are U11 (boys only), U13 and U15, and the top four teams in the U15 division will earn automatic invitations with free or discounted registration to the US Lacrosse U15 National Championship, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited, July 23-25 (girls) and 26-28 (boys) at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
“This will be the first US Lacrosse youth tournament in California, and the response has been fantastic since we announced San Jose as the site,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse and a recently honored industry leader in Connect magazine’s “40 Under 40” feature. “More teams registered for our West Championships than for any of our other three regional championships. We’re looking forward to a great tournament weekend for our participating players, coaches and families.”
US Lacrosse has been running youth tournaments since its 1998 inception. The West Championships took place in Arizona the last two years. US Lacrosse membership includes almost 50,000 players in the youth or high school levels along the West Coast and into Utah and Colorado, including nearly 10,000 alone in the Northern California Chapter of US Lacrosse. That figure ranks 10th among the NGB’s 64 chapters.
“We are delighted to partner with the Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center and host the 2013 US Lacrosse West Championships,” said Bill Sherry, CEO of Team San Jose. “San Jose is the gateway to Northern California, offering plenty for the estimated 2,000 families and visitors to do while they stay and play in San Jose during the championships.”
There is no admission charge for spectators at the US Lacrosse West Championships. Games begin at 4 p.m. PT Friday. Championship games are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. PT Sunday.
Easton is the manufacturer sponsor of the US Lacrosse West Championships, powered by Lacrosse Unlimited. Gatorade is the event’s official thirst quencher.
