UMBC Names Captains for 2011-12; to Meet Hopkins Again in Face-Off Classic

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team has selected senior attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage), junior attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) and junior long-stick midfielder Ethan Murphy (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) as its captains for the 2011-12 season.
"We are pleased with the selection of Rob, Scott and Ethan as this year's captains,” head coach Don Zimmerman said. “They are outstanding individuals in their own right, and this trio will now have the opportunity to work together as leaders, representing the 2012 Retrievers on and off the playing field."
Grimm led the squad with 35 points on 17 goals and 18 assists in 2011. He has amassed 89 career points with 43 goals and 46 helpers. The 2009 All-Rookie Team member scored a career-best four goals in the America East semifinal contest in May and was named to the All-Championship Team.
After scoring two goals as a freshman, Jones broke out and posted a 23-goal campaign to lead the 2011 Retrievers. He earned America East Second Team honors and was tabbed as UMBC Athletics’ April Athlete of the Month.
Murphy competed in all 13 games last season caused a team-high 12 turnovers. He recorded 27 ground balls and capped his season with a goal and an assist in the America East semifinal contest.

In other news, for the second consecutive year, UMBC will face Johns Hopkins University in the nightcap of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic. This year’s triple-header will take place on Sat., March 10 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
The Retrievers and Blue Jays will meet at 4:00 p.m. Princeton will take on North Carolina at 11:00 a.m. and Virginia battles Cornell at 1:30 p.m.
"UMBC Lacrosse is excited to once again participate in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic,” head coach Don Zimmerman said. “To be a part of this prestigious event is a great opportunity for our players and fans alike."
The entire 2012 schedule will be announced later this fall.
