After a short respite, the UMBC men’s lacrosse team completed the competition phase of their trip to Japan on June 4 and 5, by taking on three Japanese universities.
On June 4, the Retrievers faced the University of Tokyo, Hitotsubashi University and Waseda University in three of 20-minute mini-games played in sweltering heat at the University of Tokyo Field.
UMBC defeated the hosts, 5-0, triumphed over Hitosubashi, 7-2, and outlasted Waseda, 6-3. Rising sophomore Drew Borsody (Laytonsville, Md./Seneca Valley) scored two of UMBC’s five goals vs. Tokyo, rising senior Conor Finch (Westminster, Md./Boys’ Latin) led the guests in the middle game, while rising sophomore Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) posted a hat trick in in the nightcap.
The following day, the Retrievers renewed a rivalry with Japan’s national collegiate champions, Keio University. The Unicorns have been frequent visitors to the states and UMBC in the past decade. It was a close game throughout, but senior Jake Zimmerman (Towson, Md./Boys’ Latin) scored a pair of goals to lead the Retrievers to an 8-6 triumph.
UMBC won all six competitions during their stay.
