Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Announces 2012 Captains

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seniors Sarah Holden (Syracuse, N.Y.), Janelle Stegeland (Cortland, N.Y.), Jill Cammett (Norwell, Mass.) and junior Michelle Tumolo (Mullica Hill, N.J.) have been named captains for the 2012 Syracuse squad, head coach Gary Gait announced on Thursday. Each of the four played in all 18 games during the Orange's 2011 campaign.

Holden netted a career-best 30 goals last season, which ranked third on the team. She recorded a career high in points in the Orange's win at Louisville when she scored four goals and recorded two assists against the Cardinals.

Anchoring a strong defense, Stegeland helped the SU defense rank fourth in the Big East in goals against average last season. She finished the season with seven ground balls and a career-high nine draw controls.

Cammett was part of the Orange's defense that held opponents to fewer than 10 goals on 11 occasions, including five consecutive contests to the end the 2011 regular season. Cammett caused a career-best six turnovers last season tied her career high with three draw controls. In addition, Cammett recorded her first career assist in SU's win against Connecticut.

Tumolo has posted 64 goals and 70 assists over her two-year stint with the Orange. She was seventh in the Big East in 2011 in points per game (3.50) and tied for second in the league in game-winning goals (4). She led the team in points (63) and assists (33) last season, while ranking fourth in goals (30). The junior attacker was an All-Big East First Team selection, as well as an All-Northeast Region First Team honoree.

Syracuse claimed a share of the Big East regular-season title last year, posting a 7-1 mark in league play. The Orange completed a successful fall season in preparation for the upcoming season. After taking on Boston College, Albany, New Hampshire and Harvard in its first weekend of action, Syracuse hosted Massachusetts, Canisius, Cortland and Cornell for its annual Play Day. The Orange travelled to Princeton, where it faced the Tigers, North Carolina, Florida and Pennsylvania. Syracuse also faced Cornell, Canisius and NYAC in Ithaca, and Stony Brook and Fairfield.
