Syracuse University Lacrosse Player Charged with DWI after Crashing Coach's Car

The Post-Standard, Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse University lacrosse player is facing driving while intoxicated, hit and run and resisting arrest charges following a crash in a car owned by the SU lacrosse coach early morning Monday in the Westcott Street area.

Kevin Drew, 21, of 831 Sumner Ave., was charged early Monday in the 1500 block of Lancaster Avenue, according to court records. A police officer witnessed a 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer strike a parked 1990 Toyota about 3:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Broad Street, records state.

The officer chased the Trail Blazer at speeds of 50 mph, over the posted 30 mph speed limit. After the vehicle finally pulled over, Drew, who was the only one in the car, did not follow police commands to get out of the car with his hands up, documents state.

As the officer approached Drew, Drew got into an aggressive stance, and Officer John Gunsalus “delivered one front kick strike to Drew’s chest area,” knocking him to the ground.

Drew told police the Trail Blazer belonged to a roommate. Court records show that the car is registered to John Desko, 121 Terrytown Heights, Syracuse. Desko is the varsity lacrosse coach at Syracuse University and Desko’s son, Tim Desko, is Drew’s roommate and a member of the team, John Desko said Tuesday.

The car is the one his son drives, John Desko said. Neither the coach nor his son knew Drew took the vehicle, John Desko said.

Besides the misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, Drew was charged with passing a stop sign, speeding, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to comply and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Drew told police that a woman he was dating left his home and he wanted to follow her to see where she was going, records state. Asked by an officer if he had been drinking, Drew said that he was drinking beer. Asked how much, Drew answered, “A lot,” records state.

Syracuse University is preparing a press release on the incident, Desko said. For more information regarding the matter please continue reading at The Post-Standard...
