Syracuse Lacrosse Announces 2013 Captains

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt senior Steve Ianzito (Clay, N.Y.), seniors Brian Megill (Clark, N.J.), JoJo Marasco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Joe Fazio (Syracuse, N.Y.), and junior Derek Maltz (Ashburn, Va.) have been named captains for the 2013 season, head coach John Desko announced on Monday, Oct. 15.

All five were elected in a vote by their teammates. Megill and Marasco will serve as captains for the second year in a row, while the others will be in the role for the first time.

Ianzito is one of the Orange’s primary defensive midfielders. Last season, he contributed two points (one goal, one assist) and was a member of a defensive unit that ranked eighth nationally in caused turnovers per game (8.59). For his career, Ianzito has played 46 games and has 10 points (six goals, four assists).

A 2012 unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection and USILA Second Team All-American, Megill set the SU single-season record with 37 caused turnovers last year. He ranked fifth in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (2.2), and led the team with 62 ground balls. Megill has been a starter on close defense since first stepping foot on campus in 2010. He’s played in 49 career games and has recovered 135 ground balls.

Marasco was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team for the second straight year in 2012 after starting all 17 games in the midfield. He led all SU midfielders with 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) and recorded at least one point in 16 of the team’s 17 contests.

Fazio has played in 28 games during his first three seasons. He saw action in all 17 contests as a reserve long-stick midfielder in 2012 and picked up 10 ground balls, while forcing five turnovers.

Maltz had a breakout year as a first-time starter on attack last season. He led the Orange with 28 goals and was second on the team in scoring with 37 points (28 goals, nine assists). Against Rutgers at last year’s ESPNU Warrior Classic, Maltz netted a career-best six goals, the most for an SU player in one game since 2008.
