Shannon Smith Wins Honda Award

NEW YORK -- Shannon Smith of Northwestern has won the Honda Sports Award as the top woman in college lacrosse.

Smith, of West Babylon, N.Y., led the Wildcats to the NCAA championship last month. She scored four goals, including the game-winner, in an 8-7 victory over top-ranked Maryland. She helped Northwestern win its sixth women's lacrosse title in seven years.

Smith was the Division I leader in points per game (5.57), and ranked fourth nationally in goals per game (3.74). She scored 18 goals in the NCAA tournament, second-most in history.

The other finalists were Grace Gavin of Loyola University in Maryland, and Maryland teammates Sarah Mollison and Kate Schwarzmann. The nominees were selected by the U.S. Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association.

Smith is eligible for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year honor, which will be awarded June 27 in New York.
