SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Richmond sophomore long stick defenseman Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, New York) today earned his second Southern Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week award.
Hynes collected a game-high nine ground balls and caused three turnovers as the Spiders put the clamps on Furman in an 8-2 home league win last Saturday. The nine ground balls are the second-most for a SoCon men's lacrosse student-athlete in a single game this season. Hynes and the defense caused as many turnovers as the team committed, with 13 caused in the game. The three starting defensemen caused 10 of the 13 for the game.
Hynes leads Richmond with 18 caused turnovers and is second only to goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest School) with 35 ground balls. Pugh is Richmond's other winner of the defensive weekly SoCon award. He has added a goal and two assists on breakaway situations this season. He is Richmond’s all-time leader in ground balls (113) and caused turnovers (53). Hynes is fifth in the SoCon and 18th in the country in caused turnovers per game.
Richmond is off to a 7-4 start, already beating last year's win totlal in the program's first season. The Spiders have outscored their three league opponents 45-11 combined in their 3-0 start. The three league wins also beats last season's first program total.
Hynes previously won the Defensive Player of the Week award on March 24, while Pugh won on February 10 and 17 and March 10. Sophomore Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Maryland) took Offensive Player of the Week honors on February 24 and sophomore J.P. Forester (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan) won SoCon Offensive Player of the Month for March.
