Richmond's Brendan Hynes Wins National Defensive Player of the Week Honor

PERRY, N.Y. -- Richmond sophomore long pole defenseman Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, New York) has earned National Defensive Player of the Week by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), the association announced today. This is the first such award for the Spiders in their second year of Division I men's lacrosse. He previously was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, his third such award of the season and second in a row.

Hynes put together his first career hat trick, scoring three goals on just three shots in Richmond’s 20-9 win at High Point last Saturday to stay in first place in the league at 4-0. Hynes had a game-high eight ground balls and added two caused turnovers and produced an assist for a career-best four-point game.

The week before, he set the season high with nine ground balls in an 8-2 home win over Furman. He also caused three turnovers in the victory to keep Richmond undefeated in the SoCon.

Hynes leads the Spiders defensively with 43 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers, adding four goals and three assists in support of the offense this season. He is the program’s all-time leader in both categories in their second season.

The Spiders are 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the Southern Conference and were receiving votes in both national lacrosse polls this week, the fifth week of the 10 this season in which they have appeared in the "Receiving Votes" category of a major poll.

Richmond was the first program in men's lacrosse history to earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament in its first year of men's lacrosse since the tournament's inception in 1971. The Spiders were the four seed in last year's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and won both games against the regular-season co-champs to advance to the NCAA Tournament and a play-in game at Air Force.

Richmond heads to Louisville for its final road game of the season to take on new-conference opponent Bellarmine Saturday, with a 1 p.m. start. --#OneRichmond--
