SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Richmond sophomore long pole defenseman Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, New York) has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday. This is his third award in the last four weeks and Richmond’s sixth defensive award this season.
Hynes put together his first career hat trick, scoring three goals on just three shots in Richmond’s 20-9 win at High Point to stay in first place in the league at 4-0. Hynes had a game-high eight ground balls and added two caused turnovers and produced an assist for a career-best four-point game.
Hynes leads the Spiders defensively with 43 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers, adding four goals and three assists in support of the offense this season. He is the program’s all-time leader in both categories in their second season.
He joins goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest School) as the other three-time winner of the Defensive Weekly SoCon award. Those comprise six of the 10 awards given out by the league this season.
Richmond heads to Louisville for its final road game of the season to take on new-conference opponent Bellarmine Saturday, with a 1 p.m. start.
