SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Richmond sophomore goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest School) has won his second-straight Southern Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Pugh and the Spiders have started 2-0 on the season, with Richmond winning back-to-back games in the regular-season for the first time in the 19-game history of the program. The Spiders have allowed 12 goals in the last two games, the lowest two-game total in team history.
Pugh made 11 saves and allowed just six goals in a little over 54 minutes in a 15-7 win over Rutgers Saturday. He added five ground balls and intercepted a Scarlet Knights pass for a caused turnover in the contest.
Pugh is currently fourth in the NCAA in save percentage, sixth in goal-against average and eighth in saves per game after two weeks of the regular season.
He is the only winner of the league’s Defensive weekly honor, after winning last Tuesday, in the league’s first season of men’s lacrosse.
Pugh and the Spiders received votes in both major polls, the USILA Coaches Poll and the InsideLacrosse.com Media Poll, both released on Monday. Richmond’s opponent this weekend, Marquette, is also 2-0 and is ranked in both polls (17th at Inside Lacrosse and 18 by the USILA). The Spiders and Golden Eagles will play at noon on Sunday at Robins Stadium, the third of five straight home games to start the season for the Spiders.
