BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Just one game into his collegiate career, Lehigh freshman goalie Matt Poillon has earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. Poillon stopped 13-of-17 shots in the season opener at Saint Joseph’s Saturday, helping Lehigh to an 11-4 victory. In doing so, he became the first Mountain Hawk in school history to earn Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week.
Poillon and the Mountain Hawks (1-0) held the Saint Joseph’s Hawks scoreless for a span of 32:22 that stretched from the end of the first quarter through the beginning of the fourth. Lehigh tallied seven times during that period, which helped it pulled away from Saint Joe’s for good.
The Mount Sinai, N.Y. native is the first Lehigh goalie ever to win the award, which began in 2007, and is the first Mountain Hawk rookie to be recognized by the Patriot League since Dante Fantoni in 2010.
Also recognized as an honorable mention honoree was junior Ryan Snyder, who won 14-of-19 faceoffs while scooping a career-high 14 groundballs. He also dished an assist, just six seconds into the fourth quarter.
Poillon will be back between the pipes Saturday as the Brown and White host #10 Villanova in their home opener. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
