PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team hosted its fourth annual “Cardinals Clip Cancer” event on Friday, Oct. 12, raising over $8,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
“We take pride in the fact that we do a significant amount of community service and although every community event we do is important, the St. Baldrick’s event definitely is a special event for our team,” said senior captain Mike Lind.
All proceeds from the event benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research. With a combination of online pledges and money received at the event, the Cardinal lacrosse team has raised $8,039 to push its four-year total to over $30,000.
At the “Cardinals Clip Cancer” event, team members, members of the Cardinals’ coaching staff and numerous community members shaved their heads to illustrate solidarity for children who lose their hair while undergoing cancer treatments. Later that night, Plattsburgh State wrapped up its non-traditional season against McGill University, donning special “St. Baldrick’s Foundation” pinnies for the event.
“Not only did we manage to raise a great deal of money, but the act of shaving our heads allows us to serve as representatives for the foundation,” added Lind.
“The event brings us together not just as a team, but with the coaches, parents and community as well.”
In addition to the fundraising efforts of the men’s lacrosse team, “Cardinals Clip Cancer” was made possible with the support of Olive Ridley’s and the CV-TEC Cosmetology Program. Olive Ridley’s donated the use of their restaurant for the event, while members of the cosmetology program were on-hand to shave over 70 heads to help the Cardinals achieve their goal.
Although this year’s event is over, the Cardinals are still hoping to hit the $10,000 mark this year. Online donations to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation are still being accepted and can be made by visiting http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/5408/2012.
“The foundation is for a great cause and helping these kids is the best part of being involved with St. Baldrick’s.”
