DALLAS, Jan. 24, 2013 -- The Fifth Annual Patriot Cup Lacrosse Tournament returns to Dallas on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at SMU’s Ford Stadium.
The Patriot Cup will showcase some of the nation’s premier collegiate and high school programs, including Big East powerhouse - Georgetown, who will face Dartmouth. Two Texas programs and top MCLA teams, SMU vs. Texas A&M, will also be featured.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization that seeks to assist men and women of the armed forces who have been severely injured during conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations around the world.
"The Patriot Cup has grown beyond our expectations in the last five years,” said Patriot Cup Co-Chair Tom Fitzsimmons. “These matchups highlight Dallas as the place to see lacrosse played at its best. No sport has grown faster at the high school and college levels over the last ten years. ”
In addition to the Dartmouth vs. Georgetown game, two of the best high school teams in the nation will square off when Texas state champion, Highland Park, and the Lawrenceville School of Princeton, New Jersey, take the field. Highland Park will also rekindle its rivalry with Flower Mound, who they beat by one goal in the D2 North Division Finals- on their way to the state championship in 2012.
“This is a great opportunity for fans of all ages to really get up close and watch some of the best lacrosse teams in the country, at all levels,” added Co-Chair Tim Perkins.
Dartmouth head coach Andy Towers is excited about the prospect of bringing his team to Texas, lacrosse’s newest ‘hotbed’ of top-level competition.
“I think Texas is fast becoming one of the nation's hotbeds for Division I recruits. In general, they always seem to be very athletic, coachable, and willing to put in the work necessary to reach their potential as people, students, and athletes,” says Coach Towers. “Not to mention, they're hyper-competitive as well. These are all qualities that coaches look for in recruiting.”
Georgetown head coach Kevin Warne added, “I think playing in the Patriot Cup is great for the Georgetown lacrosse program. It’s an opportunity for our guys to experience a different atmosphere. It also gives us a chance to help grow the sport away from the East Coast into a place like Texas.”
