AMHERST, Mass. – Alex White scored a career-high three goals, and Kevin Vaughan recorded three assists, but the Harvard men’s lacrosse team fell on the road at No. 2/3 Massachusetts by a score of 16-8 Tuesday evening.
Will Walker added two goals and an assist for the Crimson, which sees its overall record slip to 4-4. White also won 6-of-11 faceoffs and collected five ground balls, while Keegan Michel went 6-of-14 in faceoff chances. Will Manny (5-2-7) and Art Kell (4-1-5) paced UMass in scoring, as the Minutemen improve to 8-0 overall this spring.
After the Minutemen opened with a 2-0 lead, Daniel Eipp got the Crimson on the scoreboard with a tally at 8:30 of the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 2-1. UMass, though, responded with the next two goals to move ahead, 4-1, with 6:31 to play in the opening stanza. With one second left in the quarter, Kevin Vaughan slipped a pass in front of the net to Jack Walker, who finished for a goal, making it a 4-2 game.
With 13:19 to play in the second, Will Walker accepted a pass from Carl Zimmerman for a tally, getting the Crimson within one, 4-3. The Minutemen went on another 2-0 scoring run to grab a 6-3 lead, but the Crimson’s Alex White cut the deficit to two, 6-4, with an unassisted tally with 3:57 to play in the half. Later in the second, UMass tacked on two more goals to carry an 8-4 lead into the half. At the break, the Minutemen held a 21-12 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in faceoffs.
In the third, UMass added three straight goals, but White tallied a man-up goal off an assist by Vaughan with 4:30 left in the frame, as the Minutemen led, 11-5. With 1:11 remaining in the quarter, White tallied his third goal of the game, as the Crimson got back within six, 12-6.
In the final frame, Vaughan dished out his third assist on Will Walker’s second tally with 2:16 left, but the Crimson trailed, 16-7. Harvard also scored the next goal when Jeff Cohen found the back of the net with 1:38 remaining, making it a 16-8 game.
UMass held the final count in shots, 37-32, ground balls, 28-23, and faceoffs, 15-12. The Crimson went 3-of-7 on man-up opportunities, with White, Cohen and Will Walker tallying one apiece. Harvard also finished 10-of-12 on clear attempts.
Harvard will return to Cambridge to welcome Michigan to Harvard Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.
