COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland head men's lacrosse coach John Tillman announced today that Ryan Moran has been promoted to associate head coach/offensive coordinator. A former Terrapin men's lacrosse All-American, Moran is the program's first-ever associate head coach and will begin his fifth season on the Maryland sideline this fall, having joined the staff as an assistant coach in the fall of 2008.
"Ryan has certainly earned this promotion," said Tillman. "He's continued to improve as a coach, expanded his responsibilities and has played a major role in Maryland's success over the four years. He's played a major role in our ever-improving recruiting, and has developed a greater understanding of all the different facets of being a head coach. He's helped us reach Final Fours and win an ACC championship. The list of players he has helped develop is impressive and goes back to his time as an assistant at Navy."
"I want to thank Coach Tillman for this great opportunity to take the next step in my coaching career," said Moran. "I'm honored and humbled to be the first to have the title of associate head coach at the University of Maryland and am committed to continuing to work to make this the best men's lacrosse program in the country. We have experienced tremendous success here over the past four seasons, but I believe there are bigger and better things to come in the future for Maryland lacrosse."
Since returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach on September 22, 2008, Moran has been responsible for coaching the Terrapin offense and face-off men.
One of the finest recruiters in the nation, Moran helped with the recruiting efforts that have seen Maryland consistently rank among the top recruiting classes in the nation.
During his four seasons in College Park, Moran has helped lead the Terps to four NCAA tournament appearances, including back-to-back NCAA championship game appearances in 2011 and 2012, and the 2011 ACC championship.
One of the finest offensive minds in the country, Moran has helped lead the Maryland offense to double-digit goals in each of his four seasons against one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
Last season, the Terps once again played for the national title and the Terps' consistent offense played a big part in the run to Memorial Day. Maryland finished the season scoring 10.72 goals per game. Maryland was No. 1 in the nation in committing the fewest turnovers per game.
The 2011 season saw Maryland win its first ACC title since 2005 and the Terps earned a berth in the NCAA title game for the first time since 1998. The Terrapin offense averaged 10.56 goals per game and four offensive Terps earned All-America honors.
One of the finest faceoff instructors in the country, Moran's influence was felt immediately and the Terps' faceoff winning percentage has increased in each of his first three seasons, culminating in 2011's percentage of 61.8, which is the highest for a Maryland team since 2002. Under Moran's tutelage Curtis Holmes earned All-America honors in 2011 as a faceoff man.
Another of Moran's faceoff pupils, Charlie Raffa, was a key factor in helping the U.S. U19 national team win the gold medal at the 2012 FIL U19 World Championships in Finland. Raffa won 10 of the U.S. team's 17 faceoff victories in the 10-8 win over Canada in the gold medal game.
Overall, Moran has help lead five Maryland players to a total of 11 All-America honors in four seasons.
Moran joined the Terps after serving as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy from 2006-08, including serving as the team's offensive coordinator in 2008. While at Navy, Moran helped guide the Midshipmen to a pair of Patriot League championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. Under his tutelage, the Navy face-off unit was one of the nation's best, winning better than 56 percent of its draws in each season. In addition to his coaching duties at the Naval Academy, Moran was also a combat instructor, teaching Wresting, Boxing, and Martial Arts.
During his four-year tenure as a Maryland student-athlete, Moran was an All-American as a senior in 2003, as well as an All-ACC honoree and a member of the ACC All-Tournament team, while helping the Terps reach the NCAA Final Four.
Moran's post-collegiate career saw him play for the Baltimore Bayhawks, Philadelphia Barrage and the Long Island Lizards in Major League Lacrosse.
