Washington, DC, July 19, 2011 - Matt Breslin, a three year starter, All American and captain of the 2001 Duke University men's lacrosse team, joined The Washington Inner City Lacrosse Foundation (WINNERS Lacrosse) as Executive Director in June 2011.
Breslin, founder of Breakout Lacrosse, a DC based organization that runs lacrosse clinics, camps and teams for elementary to high school aged girls and boys, will be responsible for continuing WINNERS 11 year history of successfully using lacrosse to reach underserved elementary and middle school aged girls and boys. Breslin said, "Coming on board as Executive Director of WINNERS gives me the opportunity to devote 100% of my time to the game I love and to inspire kids to not only become good lacrosse players, but more importantly tremendous people on and off the field. I couldn't be happier and more excited to reach even more kids in this area using lacrosse as the tool to teach life values essential for success - teamwork, leadership, respect, strong work ethic, responsibility, and sportsmanship." Tom McHugh, WINNERS Board President added, “Having Matt Breslin take the helm at WINNERS will most definitely achieve the Board’s goal of growing the WINNERS program and the amount of participants in the program. We are thrilled to have someone of Matt’s caliber working with the kids and taking the WINNERS program to new heights.”
In his first on the field program with WINNERS, Coach Breslin brought 17 WINNERS boys and girls to the White House on July 11th to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s "Let's Move!" campaign on the South Lawn. "What an amazing experience for all the kids!" Breslin continued, "It was such a thrill to see the huge smiles on the kids' faces while playing a game they love with the White House as the backdrop. It is safe to say – that was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am thrilled they got to experience it.”
WINNERS Lacrosse is a DC based 501-C-3 organization that was started in October 2000 to provide youth from historically underserved neighborhoods, in the greater Washington metropolitan area, the opportunity to learn the game of lacrosse. More importantly, WINNERS Lacrosse uses the game of lacrosse as the vehicle to instill values, education and life sustaining skills that will give young boys and girls the opportunity to be successful. Since its inception in 2000, WINNERS has introduced the game of lacrosse to over 5,500 inner city DC youth.
