Police are investigating an incident after they said a high school lacrosse player cross-checked another player in the head with his stick. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon during a game between DeMatha Catholic High School and North East High School outside the DC area. A lot of things are alarming. Last time I checked, lacrosse is a brutal, bone-crushing sport. Clearly, only courageous people have the balls to play this sport. Cross-checking is a an illegal hit, but does not merit calling the authorities.
I am not saying the victim is at fault at all - he was later taken to Shock Trauma, where he was treated and released - but an investigation into the hit is egregious. I've thumbed through many comments about the fight already and have unearthed a few things. It appears that the North East team was hurling racial epithets at the DeMatha team the entire game. Of course this is enough to get anyone riled up. The refs didn't take any action, so the kids had to defend themselves. The North East parents, who I assume, didn't know their own kids were inciting racial activities thought the DeMatha kids were being too aggressive. Lacrosse is an aggressive sport.
I've known DeMatha kids the majority of my life. They are good people. Off the top of my head, I can name five DeMatha graduates who currently serve as Navy SEALS: Brendan Looney(KIA), Stephen Looney, Billy Looney, Will Jones, and Steve Clagett. Btdubs, all five of them were lacrosse studs in high school and college. Maybe I'm wrong to be livid about the cops getting involved. Maybe I just hate seeing our sport getting dragged through the mud.
Hyattsville, MD - A fight in a high school lacrosse game in Anne Arundel County on Sunday sent one player to the hospital and has prompted an investigation by the State's Attorney's Office.
The altercation broke out during a game involving students from DeMatha Catholic High School and Northeast High School at Brooklyn Park Middle School. According to the league commissioner, referees warned the players several times to stop becoming overly aggressive with each other, but skirmish broke out midway through the third quarter.
A16-year-old DeMatha player cross-checked a 17-year-old Northeast player in the head with his stick, forcing the victim's chin guard into his jaw. The player was knocked to the ground and taken to a shock trauma center.
He sustained a concussion and injuries to his jaw and mouth. The victim was released from the hospital and back home Sunday evening.
“It was very heated in nature, it was described as being physical, there was obviously some pushing and shoving, possible punches thrown, words exchanged,” said Anne Arundel Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy.

Well I’m sure you know how much the media butchers every story they get. Isn’t that clarification enough? Not to insult you or anything, but the only way to truly know what happened is to have been present at the game. Anyway, I wont say that what you are saying is without reason. Especially seeing as how your argument states two contradicting points, however we must remember how the media corrupts any story they can get their hands on.
I like how people try and make it so that this incident was all about racism. I am a DeMatha grad as well as a former player and have a younger brother in the lax program, now as someone previously stated its true that NE/Pasadena still has race issues and that area is known to be a little bit more “redneck” (I grew up playing against them for Crofton), however the racial epithets being said were not the direct cause of the issue. The NE player who was hit had hit a different DeMatha player and every time the DeMatha player attempted to stand up the NE player would shove him back down. It was this that caused the accused DeMatha player to hit him. While the game never should have been allowed to escalate in such a way, I see no fault in what the one DeMatha player did to help defend his teammate.
