Marcus Holman Elected Tar Heel Captain

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — For the first time in 22 years, a single individual has been elected as the captain of a University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team. Marcus Holman, a senior attackman from Baltimore, Md., was elected captain by his teammates earlier this week.

Holman is the first solo captain of a UNC men's lacrosse team since current head coach Joe Breschi led the 1990 team to an ACC championship and the NCAA semifinals.

"It's an honor to be named captain my senior year," Holman said. "I am excited to lead with the upperclassmen and finish my career with a phenomenal group of guys."

Holman was a tri-captain of last year's team as a junior, sharing leadership duties with senior defensemen Charlie McComas and Mark Staines.

Holman had one of the most outstanding seasons in Carolina history in 2012 as he totaled 74 points on 39 goals and 35 assists. The 74 points were the third most in a single campaign in UNC lore. He was named All-ACC last year and a second-team USILA All-America. In 2010, he was tapped as the ACC Freshman of the Year.

"It was clear from the start of the fall season that Marcus Holman would again lead our program as captain for the 2012-13 academic year," said UNC head coach Joe Breschi. "He has certainly earned the respect of his teammates as a leader by example both on and off the field with his tremendous work ethic and contagious energy to perform at the highest level."
