The Future is Orange and Blue
The Best Recruiting Classes in HS 2022.
National Championships help recruiting. And after winning two national championships in the past four seasons, The University of Virginia is #1 when it comes to recruiting. The Lacrosse Playground’s Top-66, powered by Sirius Lacrosse, the Nation’s best data-driven lacrosse evaluation and ranking system ever created, indicates that UVA boasts 8 Top-66, Class of 2022 Recruits and predicts that it is well positioned to make title run, after title run.
Three of the eight UVA players on Lacrosse Playground’s Top-66 are ranked in the top-ten alone. Led by attackman and over-all #2 in the class and #2 attackman Truitt Sunderland (Calvert Hall College High School, Towson, MD) the UVA power class is joined by fellow top-tens Joey Terenzi (#4 over-all, #1 Midfielder, Manhasset High School, Manhasset, NY) and Mack Till (#9 over-all, #1 SSDM, Trinity-Pawling High School, Pawling, NY).
The other Top-66 recruits headed to UVA:
- Mack Eldridge, #13 over-all, #1 FOGO
- Malachi Jones, #18 over-all, #3 Defense
- Kyle Morris, #21 over-all, #2 Goalie
- Ryan Colsey, #28 over-all, #5 Attack
- John Schroder, #35, #7 Defense
More for the Orange and Blue.
Syracuse would not be outdone, at least not by much. Landing the #1 Recruit in the class helped the Orange earn the second best recruiting class of 2022 HS graduates. Future Syracuse-#22 (Iconic Syracuse Jersey and Honor), Joey Spallina (Mt. Sinai High School, Mt. Sinai, NY) was the #1 over-all recruit and the #1 ranked attackman. Spallina’s skills are virtually unmatched and he will lead a very talented class heading to ‘Cuse. #3 over-all, and #1 Defenseman, Billy Dwan (Loyola Blakefield High School, Towson, MD) will be on the opposite end of the field from Spallina during their four years together. In between Joey and Billy, at midfield, is Carter Kempney, the #10 over-all player and the #2 midfield recruit (Carthage High School, Carthage, NY).
The other Top-66 recruits headed to Syracuse:
- Vincent Tujillo, #24 over-all, #2 SSDM
- Jimmy McCool, #26 over-all, #5 Goalie
- Michael Leo, #27 over-all, #4 Attack
- Zach Mercado, #31 over-all, # 3 SSDM
- Dillon Sagedar, #51 over-all, #6 LSM
Recruiting Class rankings were determined by the Lacrosse Playground’s Top-66 individual player rankings’ summation of value that are headed to each University. Numbers of total recruits for players outside the Top-66 were not included in the rankings; “Strength of Recruits” is given more value than “Quantity of Recruits”.
The Top Recruiting Classes (with at least 3 Top-66, 2022 Recruits):
- Virginia
- Syracuse
- Duke
- Notre Dame *
- UNC
- Harvard
- Maryland
- Johns Hopkins
- Ohio State
- Yale
- Georgetown
- Penn State
- Cornell
* The University of Notre Dame did the most with the least relative to the Top-66. While they only had three Top-66 recruits, their “average rating per recruit” came in narrowly behind #1 Virginia by just 0.04 hundredths of a point; indications of great recruiting at the top and great things to come for the Irish.
Final Notes:
- Look for the Big10 to spend big and recruit deep this year on the 2023s. They were beaten handily by the ACC who captured all positions 1-5 in the 2022 class rankings.
- Georgetown (Big East) was the only school other than those in the ACC (5), B10 (4), or Ivy (3) to dominate in landing Top-66 Talent from the 2022 recruiting class.
- The 2022 Midfield Class was evenly shared. Of the Top-66’s Top 15 middies, no school landed more than one recruit- 15 players, 15 different schools.
- Top Attackman wear Orange and Blue. 4 out of the top 5 attackman will play at either Syracuse or Virginia.
- Defenders are smart. 61% of the Top Ranked Defenders are headed to top academically-ranked Universities.
- 23 Universities landed at least 1 player on The Lacrosse Playground’s Top-66.
The Lacrosse Playground and Sirius Lacrosse would like to thank the over 100+ evaluators, coaches, directors, and players, from across the USA and Canada that contributed their time and talent, for over 2 years, to help create the 2022, TOP-66.

Jack can shake, thrash, roll, shoot, feed. He is very quick and fast and can not be slowed down by a shortie. He will move a D and force teams to slide early. He has range and forces early engagement.

He needs to work on his bounce-and-feed to open to open up more dodging opportunities and to take advantage of slides. A right handed split dodge would serve his strong left hand well.

Big body lefty that gets his fuel from lasagna, contact, and scoring goals. He’s hard to slow down and once he gets position, it’s up to the goalie to bail you out.

Give Brock the rock because all he does is score goals. He loves to dodge, take contact, and will shoot to score. He can even paint corners with a "greaser". Gritty over pretty.

12 | Lucas Osborne
Lucas could play and dominate in every conference. Perhaps the middie with the most upside and the player that can beat you from anywhere on the field. The Canadian could drop down closer to GLE and be a heck of a wing player. He has great vision and strength. A do it all middie that brings a hard-hat to practice every day.

Yale does things Yales way. If Osborne finds the seams to operate in Shays scheme, it will be good. Osborne will need to get smarter on the field.
11 | Matthew Collison
Collison can play O-Fence, and dominate. He has grown into his frame (read slimmed down) and will be a force in Jr's sets: in the two-man, as a dodger, shooter, attackman, or middie. He is top talent with and without the ball. Play him at attack, play him at middie, but just play him.

6 | Dominic Pietramala
Shooters gotta shoot. When Dom is hot, there is no comparison. He can be snappy, change his planes, step into a strong stroke, and do stuff you can’t copy. He shoots hard and heavy and dodges like a wet noodle. BTW he is a middie not an attackman. Keep him above GLE, get him a pick, and 3-6 inches of separation. He has mean streak (see last name genealogy). He will hit you, check you, score on you, and not think twice about "dom"inating you. #1 A/M.

2 | Truitt Sunderland
Sunderland is the best QB, X-attackman, wing-dodger, feeder, shooter, riding-attackman and all-around offensive player in the class. He's a natural at X. Dodges, feeds, and finishes with both hands. Can play all 6 spots on O. He's as smart, tough, two handed, and competitive as they come. He is fast with a COD that's tough to cover. There are few in the class that can play unsettled and settled lacrosse like Sunderland, except for Spallina. Truitt is the player that makes everyone around him better. The Top 66 evaluators and ranking system has him just 1 ten-thousandth of a point behind the #1 spot.

1 | Joey Spallina
Joey does Joey things, better than anybody. Joey Spallina: Best hands in the class. Best finisher in the class. Throw it near him, he will catch it. Give him a square inch of net the net, he will find it. Slide from Joey, Goal. Slide to Joey, Assist. Peek at the ball, Goal. Slow to rotate, Assist. Bad approach, Goal. In transition, JS is a magician and he will work an Assist and a Goal. He will ride you to death. He will body up. He will slip you, roll you, shoot around you, over you, through you. He single handedly won the LI High School championship in 2021. He's a coach on the field and brings a Long-Island swagger you can’t touch. The force is strong with this one. Spallina is a true #22. Joey Spallina is the #1 attackman and #1 player in the class. These are Joey things. Repeat, Joey does Joey things.

Needs a wing man/pick man to find his greatest success, especially when defenses engage him below GLE. Fortunately, Syracuse isn’t short on supporting cast. Joey will need to learn to bounce after he gets above GLE against top defenders to play under less duress and contact (and deal with the pressure of # _.)
