POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (4/4/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team outscored Marist, 4-1, in the second half, but it was not enough as the Red Foxes edged the Titans, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.
It was the ninth all-time meeting between the two schools and the sixth decided by one goal with seven of the eight coming down to three goals or less. Marist improved to 7-3 on the year and 4-0 in the MAAC, while Detroit fell to 5-5, 1-2 in league play.
Senior Scott Drummond (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) led the way with three goals for his second hat trick of the season. Seniors Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, Ont. / Denis Morris) and Brandon Beauregard (Clarkston, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep) recorded a goal and an assist and sophomore Jason Weber (Whitby, Ont. / Christ School (N.C.) made 13 saves in net.
Detroit trailed at the half, 7-3, but scored three goals in the third and another in the fourth. The Titans also had a few opportunities with the ball down just one in the last six minutes, but just couldn't knock in the equalizer.
The Titans started their comeback attempt with 9:43 on the clock in the third as Adams netted an unassisted marker. Marist would get it back with under five to go in the period, but the red, white and blue struck back with the man up as senior Mike Birney (Plymouth, Mich. / Catholic Central) was set up by Beauregard and he fired one in with 3:11 left.
UDM would strike again with 29 seconds left in the period as after the Red Foxes' goalie came up with a save. There was a scrum in front of the net and sophomore Kyle Beauregard (Clarkston, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep) corralled the ball and whipped one in to make it an 8-6 contest.
In the fourth, both teams were held scoreless until the 6:59 mark as Drummond was able to ring up his hat trick and it was just a one-goal contest at 8-7. Detroit then had three good chances to try and knot the score up in the next five minutes, but the Titans were turned away with a couple of turnovers and a shot wide of the goal.
Detroit outshot Marist, 33-30, including 23-6 in the second half. The Titans were also 14-of-17 on the clear and caused six of Marist's 14 turnovers.
Junior Damien Hicks (Copiague, N.Y. / Copiague) was 9-of-19 on faceoffs with two ground balls. Drummond, juniors Jordan Yono (Novi, Mich. / Catholic Central) and Mike Spuller (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter), redshirt freshman Pat Masterson (London, Ont. / Hill Academy) and freshman Mark Anstead (Potomac, Md. / Gonzaga) all had two ground balls and Yono and Masterson each had a caused turnover.
It was back and forth early on as Marist opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, but Brandon Beauregard was able to tally his marker just a minute later. The Titans took a 2-1 lead on Drummond's first of the day at the 8:32 mark, but the Red Foxes evened it up just 10 seconds later and then led 4-2 with 3:19 remaining.
Drummond's MAAC-high sixth power play goal cut the deficit to 4-3 late in the first, but Marist would blank Detroit in the second period and take a 7-3 advantage at the break.
UDM will now return home for a Titan lacrosse doubleheader next Saturday, April 11, as the men's team host Monmouth at 11:00 a.m., and the women's squad faces Howard at 2:00 p.m.
