WASHINGTON - Head Coach Dave Urick and the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team has announced goalie CT Fisher (Chevy Chase, Md./Landon), midfielder Neil McGroarty (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and midfielder Gerry Reilly (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Xavier) as team captains for the 2012 season.
"I think it is a credit to the players on the team to select these three young men, based on their leadership and character," Urick said. "All three of them are excellent leaders, hard workers and have the kind of character and integrity that the Georgetown lacrosse program strives to epitomize."
Fisher enters his senior season, having appeared in 15 career games in goal during, starting six, all during the 2010 season. He is 3-3 in three seasons, making a career-high 16 saves in a victory over Delaware in 2010 and earning a victory in GU's 2010 season-finale victory over Villanova. Fisher played in six games during the 2011 season, splitting time with starter Jack Davis.
"By the nature of CT's position he has to be a leader and that's a quality he embodies," Urick said.
McGroarty, a former walk-on, enters his fourth season with the Hoyas as a midfielder. During his career, McGroarty has established himself as a hard-working, dedicated athlete who will be looking to carve out a role during the 2012 season as a short stick defensive midfielder.
"Neil epitomizes what intercollegiate athletics should be about," Urick said. "We tested our athletes (in the weight room) at the end of the fall he graded out the best of anyone on the team, which is a significant indicator of how hard he works."
Reilly, who began his time on the Hilltop with the football team, has emerged as a strong short stick defensive middie for the Hoyas. In 2011, Reilly finished fourth on the team, picking up 32 ground balls. He finished last season with five goals, including a game-tying goal with five seconds left in regulation against No. 1 Syracuse at the Konica-Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium. Reilly has eight career goals and 45 career ground balls.
"Gerry Reilly is obviously a very good player, but also one of the hardest workers on the team and someone who is going to lead on and off the field," Urick said.
Georgetown will open its 2012 season under the lights at Multi-Sport Field when they host University of Maryland on Friday, February 24 at 7 p.m. The Hoyas return six starters from a 2011 team that finished 7-7, placing third in the BIG EAST with a 4-2 conference record. Urick will also add 12 newcomers, including 11 freshmen to the roster, that returns second team All-BIG EAST honoree Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta,/The Hill Academy) at attack.
