Hopkins Men's Lacrosse Names Durkin, Ranagan Captains


BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala announced today senior defenseman Tucker Durkin (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle College HS) and senior midfielder John Ranagan (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) have been selected as captains for the 2013 season in a vote of their teammates. This will be the first time either has served as a team captain for the Blue Jays.

A two-time All-American and the 2012 Schmeisser Award winner as the nation's top defenseman, Durkin has started all 47 games of his career on close defense for the Blue Jays. He earned First Team All-America honors last season, when he matched his career highs with 35 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. He became the 13th Johns Hopkins player to earn the Schmeisser Award and the first since Brian Kuczma in 1997 and has career totals of 95 ground balls, 49 caused turnovers and two assists.

Ranagan, who earned First Team All-America honors as a sophomore and second team honors last year, has played in all 47 games in his career with 39 starts to his credit. He totaled 16 goals and seven assists last season to boost his career totals to 43 goals and 26 assists for 69 points. He finished fifth on the team in goals and points last season and was the only sophomore in the country (at any position) to earn First Team All-America honors in 2011.

Johns Hopkins will participate in the Capital Lacrosse Invitational on Sunday, October 7 at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. The Blue Jays will take on Penn State and Cornell in their only outside competition of the fall. The Blue Jays are tentatively scheduled to open the 2013 season at home against Siena on Friday, February 8.
