Hartford Lays it Down on Brown, 20-6

Providence, Rhode Island - Senior Aiden Genik scored five goals and senior goalie Scott Bement made 19 saves, to lead Hartford to its first win of the season, a surprising 20-6 men's lacrosse victory over Brown at Meister-Kavan Field. The loss drops Brown to 1-2 on the young season, while Hartford goes to 1-3 overall.
Brown got off to a fast start with senior captain Rob Schlesinger scoring the game’s initial goal in the first minute of play.
It was all Hartford for the rest of the quarter with the Hawks scoring four unanswered goals by four different players to grab a 4-1 lead after one quarter.
Brown junior middy Alex Jones gave the Bears a ray of hope by scoring from a pass from junior Roger Ferguson early in the second quarter to cut Hartford’s lead to 4-2.
But the Hawks scored six straight goals, including three by Kevin O’Shea and two by Genik, to take control of the game, and pull ahead by a 10-3 margin with 5:38 left in the second quarter.
The final numbers were surprisingly close with the Hawks out-shooting the Bears by a 42-36 margin, and the ground balls even at 33 apiece. The face-offs were relatively close with Hartford holding a 16-14 advantage on 30 face-offs.
Six different Brown players scored goals, sophomore Sam Hurster, junior Johnny DePeters, Schlesinger, sophomore Stephen Chmil, freshman Niock Piroli and Jones.
Genik added two assists to go with his three goals for Hartford, while O’Shea had three goals. Martin Bowes, Carter Bender, and Conner Yatauro each netted two goals each for the Hawks.
The Bears will look to get back on track on Saturday, March 10, traveling to Philadelphia to face St. Joseph’s. Game time is 1:00 pm.
