Florida Launch attackman and Maverik pro Owen Blye shows off the stick he’s been using during the off season. Owen Blye graduated from the University of Maryland in 2013 and selected 24th overall in the MLL Collegiate Draft.
What head and shaft are you using?
I use the Maverik Optik with the Union Shaft.
Do you string your own sticks? If not, who does?
I string my own. I've been doing it since I was young. Some say I have an ugly style, but I like it.
What kind of pocket are you using?
I use JimaLax soft mesh with a mid to low pocket. I have 2 horizontal nylons with a V-shooter below that. I don't like to play with a lot of whip.
How do you tape your sticks?
I tape the bottom 6 inches with a small raised tape butt end. I also tape the top 6 inches with a small raise about an inch below the plastic.
You had to adjust to the 2013 NCAA shooting string rule, how did you go about it? Was it a hassle?
I don't understand why they keep making rule changes with the sticks. It wasn't much of a hastle, I literally just took the V out of my stick. Didn't change anything. Guys seem to be going towards 3 straight across now anyway. If the NCAA wants a faster pace game then put in a shot clock. If they don't, then leave it alone. Stop messing with the sticks and face offs.
How has your stick changed since college?
The stick I use has changed but how it throws and handles has been the same since college.
