Four Champions Crowned at NXTsports' PILC 2014

It hasn’t taken long for NXTsports’ Philadelphia Indoor Lacrosse Championships to establish itself as one of winter’s must-attend tournaments. The 2014 edition of the PILC was no different.

With 48 teams coming from Ontario, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey to play against the best indoor lacrosse competition available, the PILC has blossomed into an elite barometer for teams to see where they stand.

Ontario’s Everest Academy proved undaunted by the eight-hour ride and the prospect of defending its High School AA Division championship, upending NXT L.C. 2015 5-2 to make claim its second consecutive title at the fourth annual PILC.

Everest’s repeat was just one of the many highlights from the PILC, which was run by NXTsports at the Feasterville Sportsplex Feb. 8-9. The tournament provided high school and youth teams with an introduction to box lacrosse concepts. Teams experienced a 6 vs. 6 tournament that had box nets, goalie equipment, and a 30-second shot clock.

Everest was one of four champions, with NXT L.C. 2017 Orange, Trashcan 7/8 and the Long Island Blues also taking home championships. Everest goalie Jerryd Jensen proved to be too tough to solve and was named the unofficial tournament MVP, while Matthew Lee had a pair of goals in the final.

NXT defeated local power Mesa Fresh Fever 2016 in the final, 13-12, as Colby Smith (Hempfield) scored his fifth goal of the game on a penalty shot as time expired. Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin/Princeton) tallied four times for Mesa.

Trashcan 7/8 got great defense, led by Henry Friedman and Matt Logan, in front of goalie Casey Hammond, who posted a superb effort in a 9-8 win over a fantastic North of the Border team for the 7th/8th grade title.

It was the Long Island Blues and everyone else in the 5th/6th grade division. The Blues were never challenged, winning by an average of 11.8 goals per game, and claimed the title with a convincing 14-4 triumph over the Rising Sons.

With 48 teams making the trip to offer an intense, competitive tournament, the PILC exceeded expectations and offered the best indoor lacrosse tournament experience to its participants. For more information on the PILC, email Vice President, Events, Robin Baxter at robin@iamnxt.com.
