DENVER – The Canadian Lacrosse Association named Canadian-native and Denver freshman Wes Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) to its final 24-man roster for the 2012 Canadian FIL U-19 Men’s Team. DU associate head coach Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) will serve as the U-19 team’s offensive coordinator.
"I'm very happy for Wes to get this opportunity to represent Canada,” Brown said. “Wes had a great camp and will be looked at for leadership at the offensive end of the field during our time in Finland.”
Brown, who is a Denver-graduate, has been responsible for DU’s offensive strategy since head coach Bill Tierney’s arrival at DU.
The selection camp was held from Nov. 25-27 and included 50 players who had been chosen from over 200 initial applicants. Berg will team up with ECAC-rivals Turner Evans (Ohio State), Reegan Comeault (Ohio State) and Jesse King (Ohio State) on the Canadian team. He will also join members of Cornell, North Carolina and Notre Dame’s lacrosse programs, all teams Denver will compete with at some point in 2012, to round out the 24-man roster.
"It's great to see more and more Canadians down here in the U.S. playing NCAA lacrosse,” Brown said. “Our players’ understanding of the field-game has blossomed over the past 5 years, and it was noticeable this past weekend."
The 2012 U-19 Men’s Field World Championships will be held in Turku, Finland, and will run from July 12-21.
