Detroit Mercy Men's Lacrosse Announces Team Captains

DETROIT – Four experienced upperclassmen comprise the Titan captains for the upcoming season as head coach Matt Holtz announced that seniors Brad Janer (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central), Ty Maruyama (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) and Jason McDonald (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) along with junior Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, MI/Brother Rice) will receive the honor for the 2012 campaign.

“Leadership is a very important part of our program,” said head coach Holtz. “These young men know what I expect from our team leaders and how to help their team move forward.”

For McDonald, it marks the third-straight year that the defenseman has received the captain distinction. A starter since he arrived at Detroit, McDonald is the only player in the history of the fourth-year program to start all 42 games. He has 58 ground balls and 45 caused turnovers to his credit and has been part of a defensive unit that has finished in the top three in the nation in caused turnovers the last two years, including topping Division I with 11.63 per game in 2011. He is a two-time member of the Detroit Athletic Director's Honor Roll and earned both MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll accolades last season.

Playing at midfield, Janer and Maruyama are both captains for the second-straight year. Janer has played in all 42 games in his career compiling 63 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers, five goals and four assists. He is one of the hardest workers in the offseason and in the weight room. He also does his work in the classroom as a three-time member of UDM's Athletic Director's Honor Roll and a two-time member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic Team.

Maruyama has seen action in 40 games wearing the red, white and blue, recording 11 goals, two assists and 21 ground balls. He was one of the Titans' first recruits and makes up for his small 5-7 frame by possessing one of the best work ethics not only on the team, but among all Titan athletes. Like Janer, he is also a three-time member of the Titan Athletic Director's Honor Roll and has been selected twice to the MAAC's Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic Team.

A fierce defenseman, Hebden earns the captain honor for the first time in his career. He has made an immediate impact to the defense since his freshman season and has started 30 of the 31 games he has appeared in, notching 88 ground balls and 64 caused turnovers. Last season, he was a second team All-MAAC performer and Detroit's Defensive Player of the Year after finishing fifth in the country in caused turnovers at 2.5 per game.
