DETROIT (9/18/2013) -- A normal day for the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse program consists of morning workouts, class and practice, but a new item was added to the agenda last week as the team is involved in a fundraiser to fight childhood cancer with the Vs. Cancer Foundation.
Detroit has already raised $1,765, just a little more than 15% of its $10,000 goal. Head coach Matt Holtz stated that if he reached his personal goal of $500, he would shave his head and as of Tuesday, Sept. 17, Coach Holtz was at $580.
"This is all for a great cause and I really believe we can reach our total goal," said Coach Holtz.
All of the money raised goes to the "Support Vs. Cancer Foundation" with half of all the proceeds going to benefit national childhood cancer research, and the other half helping kids directly at a local children's hospital.

That is not the only thing Detroit is doing to raise money as the Titans are set to play in the 2013 Breast Cancer Research Lacrosse Showcase To Benefit The Stefanie Spielman Fund this fall. After opening fall ball with a game against Ohio State on Oct. 4, the lacrosse showcase will take place on Oct. 13 at Hawken School's Walton Stadium in Chesterland, Ohio. UDM will play a doubleheader that day taking on Seton Hill at 2:00 p.m., and Mercyhurst at 4:00.
Tickets to the event are $5 presale and $10 at the gate as the full day of lacrosse action is looking to raise $12,500 for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. The fund supports laboratory discoveries that are being translated into effective treatments and new drugs for breast cancer patients, as well as other research.
