NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse program General Manager, LCDR Dan Ursino, and Head Coach, Gary Weller, announced today that three players have been selected to serve as Team Captains for the Bears’ upcoming 2013 season.
Cadet 1/c Steven Danseglio (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip), Cadet 1/c Austin English (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and Cadet 1/c Tim Wyderko (West Bloomfield, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) were selected by the coaching staff and a vote by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2013 season. Wyderko will serve a rare second year as team captain, and while Danseglio and English are first timers, English served as the Bear’s Team President in the 2012 season and Danseglio has filled an “unofficial” leadership role for the past two seasons.
“Steve, Austin and Tim are great leaders – on and off the field,” said General Manager LCDR Daniel Ursino. “They embody what it means to be Coast Guard Academy cadets. I’m more than confident in their ability to lead this year’s team, and proud that they will soon join the ranks of the Coast Guard officer corps. 2013 is a big year for us, we sent a great deal of talent from the Class of 2012 out to the fleet, but we have a talented and experienced group of 1/c cadets that are hungry to compete and win a championship. We also have a number of younger players who will have to fill holes and play prominent roles for us in 2013,” Ursino noted. “The leadership our three captains provide will be essential to the growth and success of our team this year and our staff could not be more pleased with the selection of these young men as our team captains. These cadets know being a captain is an important responsibility, and this group is looking forward to leading this year’s team and representing our program, the Academy and the Coast Guard.”
"One of the most unique aspects of the Coast Guard Academy, and the reason I love coaching at such a place, is that the school produces leaders of character. Our cadets are immersed in a culture of discipline, leadership, and service to others. Clearly, our team not only looks to our captains for guidance, but to every member of the team to play with 100-percent heart and integrity, and when needed the initiative to make great things happen. This, more than anything, makes for team atmosphere that I am proud to be a part of."
Cadet 1/c Steven Danseglio had an outstanding 2012 campaign – increasing his offensive output almost five-fold from 2011 and leading the PCLL in goals with 44. In addition to coming in third in the PCLL in points with 54, Danseglio was a menace at the faceoff x and second in the league in ground balls. Thanks to these statistics, Danseglio was chosen to the 2012 All-PCLL Second Team. He spent his summer training period aboard USCGC SPAR, a 225-foot or Juniper-Class Seagoing Buoy Tender out of Kodiak, Alaska. Aboard SPAR, he worked on Damage Control and Officer of the Deck qualifications. While underway, he participated in law enforcement boardings and search and rescue cases in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. A leader on and off the field, Danseglio organized team fundraising efforts in 2011 and 2012 that raised more than $1,000 for the LT John M. Senyard Endowment. A Marine Environmental Science major, Danseglio has also excelled in the classroom registering a 3.1 GPA last spring. This fall he will serve as the Delta Company Executive Officer (XO – second in command).
Cadet 1/c Austin English, a proud member of the “Old Bay Crew” (the sobriquet for our Maryland player contingent), has been a mainstay of the Bears offense the last three years. The talented attackman notched a career-high 56 points last season, leading the PCLL in both points and assists with 36. A prolific scorer, English’s accolades include 2012 MCLA Scholar Athlete, 2012 PCLL 1st Team All-Conference Attack, 2011 PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference Attack, 2010 PCLL 1st Team All-Conference Attack and 2010 PCLL Rookie of the Year (English was the number five scorer in the country at 5.71 points per game in 2010). English spent a portion of his summer aboard USCGC GRAND ISLE, a 110-foot Patrol Boat out of Gloucester, Mass. before reporting as an intern in the Office of Resources as Coast Guard Headquarters to finish out his training program. Like Danseglio, English has also found success off the field and achieved a 3.1 GPA for the spring semester as a Management major. This fall he will serve as the Echo Company Commander.
Cadet 1/c Tim Wyderko is the anchor of the Bears defense and earned the rare honor of selection as a team captain as a junior and senior. Wyderko is a “do everything” defender – in 2012, he had 74 ground balls, six points and too many individual clearing efforts to count. "Tim is an excellent one on one defender with great intuition," said Coach Weller. In 2011, Wyderko’s on-field exploits netted him PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference Defensemen honors. He started his summer aboard USCGC VIGILANT, a 210-foot medium endurance cutter out of Port Canaveral, Fla. and was exposed to Coast Guard counter narcotics missions throughout the Caribbean. He finished up his summer training period serving as the Bravo Company Executive Officer leading and managing the “Swab Summer” program for the newly arrived Class of 2016 – “Swab Summer” is the initial boot-camp style indoctrination period. He is a Government major and will serve as the Operations Spotlight (a lecture series that brings active duty personnel back to the Academy to address cadets) Project Officer this semester. Wyderko became the 2nd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. University of New Haven on March 27, 2011.
The Bear’s pre-season preparations have been underway since returning from Summer Training programs in mid-August. At the time of release of this article, the MCLA PCLL schedule has not been drafted. Fans can anticipate a schedule to be announced by the end of October 2012.
