Chris Malone Steps Down as Arizona State Head Coach, Team Seeking Applicants

(May, 2014) TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University Men's Lacrosse announced today that Chris Malone has stepped down as the head lacrosse coach.

"We have accepted Coach Malone's resignation with a heavy heart, and we wish him well in all of his future endeavors," said Lax Devils Director Jonathan Minder. "We have begun the national search process to find our next head coach, looking for a leader who will maintain the tradition of excellence and national prominence at the highest level of MCLA lacrosse Chris has built since he first arrived in 2008."

Malone served as the Sun Devils' head coach for six seasons, after taking over before the 2008 campaign. The team posted an overall record of 93-23 (19-1 in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference) during his tenure, including a perfect 19-0 record this year while taking the MCLA Division I #1 ranking from wire to wire before falling to the Colorado Buffaloes in a 13-12 heartbreaker. That was the Sun Devils' third appearance in the MCLA Div.- I Championship game; losing in 2010 to University of Michigan (now an NCAA Div.- I program) and in 2011 to Brigham Young University. Under Malone, the Sun Devils reached the MCLA tournament every year and the MCLA Final Four for five straight seasons.

Malone coached 38 All-Americans, seven Academic All-Americans, and 33 All-Conference players. Malone has coached three players that are in the top fourteen in the MCLA for all-time points (Eric Nelson, Ryan Westfall, and Tyler Westfall). He was named the WCLL Coach of the Year in 2008 and MCLA Coach of the Year in 2014. Malone’s tenure saw the top six seasons in the history of ASU Men’s Lacrosse, which has been in existence since 1968.

The team is immediately accepting applications for the position of head coach for the 2015 season and beyond. This is a paid, full-time position. Qualified applicants for the head coaching position should review requirements and apply via the official job posting: Application »»
