Brevard College to Field Men's and Women's Lacrosse in 2013

Brevard, N.C. - Brevard College Athletic Director Juan Mascaro announced today the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse as varsity sports beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
“This is a dynamic opportunity for the Brevard College Athletic Department and our community” said Mascaro. “With the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse, the College now offers 20 intercollegiate sports that bring a lot of excitement to campus. We’ll begin our national search immediately to hire the first-ever Brevard College Lacrosse coach.”

The new sports program, which was approved by the Brevard College Board of Trustees earlier this week, will be funded through a generous gift of $20,000 from a local friend of the College.
Lacrosse will add to the already dynamic offerings of this small, experiential liberal arts college. This fall, Brevard College enrolled its largest new student class in 15 years. The College’s cycling team also recently captured the NCAA Division II Mountain Bike National Championship.

"We are excited to be part of the expansion of men's and women's lacrosse into the South Atlantic Conference sports lineup,” said Brevard College President David Joyce. “Lacrosse is a very popular and growing sport in the NCAA, especially in our region. We are confident that lacrosse will bring a new energy and an outstanding cadre of student athletes to campus.”

The South Atlantic Conference will begin sponsoring lacrosse in 2013-2014. Men's lacrosse is currently played at Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, and Wingate, while Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry currently compete in women's lacrosse.
