Binghamton Men’s Lacrosse Announces 2012 Schedule

Vestal, N.Y.—The Binghamton men’s lacrosse program released their 2012 schedule as announced by new head coach Scott Nelson. The 13-game schedule features eight non-conference match ups and the normal slate of five America East games. BU will play host to six home games at the Bearcats Sports Complex and will be on the road for a total of seven games.

“We’re looking forward to an extremely challenging and competitive schedule this upcoming spring,” first year head coach Scott Nelson said. “The string of difficult non-conference opponents that we will see early on should be a huge benefit for us entering into the battles of conference play.”

Binghamton begins the 2012 campaign with a tough five game stretch that features two programs in the top-20 of the 2012 Face-Off Yearbook Division I Top 20 Rankings. The Bearcats host Lafayette, who handed BU a 12-6 loss last season, in the opener on February 25. Then it’s on to Ithaca, NY to battle local rival and No. 3/5 ranked Cornell, who last season made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Cornell features four preseason All-Americans and is lead by last season’s USILA national player of the year Rob Pannell. BU hits the road once again to take on a Hobart team that they dismantled 11-5 a season ago, followed by a trip back home to take on last year’s MAAC champions Siena. On March 13, Binghamton plays host to the No.18/20 ranked Colgate Red Raiders. The Bearcats picked up their signature win of the season against Colgate in 2011 by defeating the Patriot League runner-ups 8-7.

The non-conference schedule wraps up with two road contests against Manhattan on March 17 and Quinnipiac a week later. The match up with Manhattan will be the first meeting between the schools in program history. Quinnipiac, who finished last season at 7-7, made it all the way to the NEC championship game before falling to Mount St. Mary’s. After their America East opener against Albany, Binghamton will play it’s last non-conference game home against Canisius on April 3.

As mentioned earlier, Binghamton opens up the America East conference schedule at Albany on March 31. On the last day of the regular season, Binghamton clinched its berth into the 2011 America East tournament with an 8-7 victory over Albany. On April 7, BU will be looking to exact its revenge on Stony Brook at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Stony Brook, who was ranked as high as No. 13 in the nation last year, bounced Binghamton from the postseason in the semifinals of the America East tournament a season ago. The following weekend, the Bearcats make a trip to Hartford, Connecticut to try and knock off the defending America East champions. Hartford defeated Stony Brook 11-10, thanks to a last second goal that propelled them into the NCAA tournament. In their only match up last season, Binghamton defeated the Hawks 10-8 on the strength of four Matt Springer goals.

The last road trip of the regular season is to Burlington, Vermont as BU matches up against the Catamounts on April 21. This game is a rematch of the incredible 8-7 overtime thriller that gave BU its first conference victory of the 2011 season. Binghamton will host UMBC in the final regular season home game on April 28.

BU ended the 2011 campaign with a record of 7-8 (3-2 AE). Their three conference wins secured them the fourth seed in the America East tournament and a date with the No. 1 seeded Stony Brook Seawolves. The Bearcats were upended 12-8 in their first postseason appearance since 2009. Binghamton returns 25 letterwinners, including seven of 10 starters and four of their top five leaders in points. Junior Matt Springer spearheads the offense as he tallied a team-high 29 goals in 2011 and is joined by junior midfielder Tyler Perrelle, who also returns from a phenomenal season recording 11 goals and 16 assists.
