2013 Boston University Lacrosse Blog: Pretty in Pink

The 2013 season is here and we wanted to work closely with college programs to bring a part of the excitement to you. Throughout the 2013 season we will highlight lacrosse programs on our space for all of our readers to follow. Player blogs serve as a unique outlet for programs to showcase their season as it develops, plus highlight everything they have to offer a student-athlete. In contrast, families and fans get a glimpse into the program’s athletic and academic regimen.

Week 8: Pretty in Pink

**Before we get to lax I’d like to mention: Boston University has decided to discontinue our Wrestling program in 2014. The Wrestling program is the most spirited, hardworking, and passionate team BU has, quite frankly the heart of the athletic department. If you can take a moment, read about their story and sign their petition, it would be a tremendous help to save a program that deserves to stay a part of BU athletics. Thanks!**

Hey bloggers! It’s been about a week since our last post and we have 3 games to catch up on. When we last talked we had Harvard next on the docket. Our cross-river rival spanked us two years ago, and although last year we showed a little improvement with an 11-9 loss, we had some redeeming to do. This year our game was the Friday before Easter, under-the-lights, and also our Breast Cancer Awareness game. In the past, we have gotten caught up in the excitement of Save the Ta-Ta’s pink and glitter. From tape to eye black to armbands we looked like we were sponsored by Pepto Bismol, not playing for BU; among the glitz and glam we have (in the past) lost focus and forgotten the task at hand. This year Liz made it clear that as long as we had our pink socks on, the rest of the team was to focus on their game and that’s that. The game was back in forth and I’m the first to admit our fight against the Crimson wasn’t exactly pretty in pink but we pulled out with an exciting 12-11 win. Kudos to junior Sydney Godett for her game-winning goal with 12 seconds left!

We were grateful to get Easter weekend off, most of us went home or stayed with teammates to enjoy a home cooked meal, egg hunts, and enough chocolate bunnies to put a hummingbird into a sugar coma. For most people, a night home is an oasis vacation but I know for me, I wanted to get my canine fix and then get back as soon as possible. Next up was Albany, the team that closed out our season in AE semi-finals last year. I will sum up this disappointing loss to a learning experience in which we need to better possesses the ball and also that we need to score goals in order to win games. After the game we demanded that everyone dig deep and find out what it was going to take for them to step up and play to their full potential. This season is going by too quickly to keep waiting for a sign from the gods and it was time for the team to take responsibility and play up.

Our latest game was up in Vermont against a team that is known for the relentless fight in every game they’ve played thus far. We were coming off of two mentally challenging practice, fortunately those two practices flipped a switch in our heads that translated into this game. For anyone that missed this game, here is a run down: the first ten minutes was a back and forth battle, VT holding a 3-2 lead. The Catamounts took off in a seven-minute stretch to score 7 unanswered goals and suddenly held an astounding 10-2 lead with 12 minutes to go in the first half (cue the flipped switch). We responded with 5 quick goals to cut the lead to 10-7, allowed VT one more for the half and then proceeded to close the gap to 11-10. Second half started as we expected, the Catamounts came out fighting and we battled exchanging goals up to a 13-13 score. Our defense stepped up BIGTIME with caused turnovers and great aggression to allow our offense to start putting goals away and we finally held a solid 2-3 goal lead for the remainder of the game. We did allow two quick (and scary) VT goals in the final minute but finished the game with a 20-17 final score! This was the first time since 2006 BU has reached 20 goals in a game, and we had goals from 9 different people, which goes to show everyone can contribute, and when they do we are very happy with the results.

Post game, we celebrated with a team trip to the original Ben and Jerry’s ice cream shop and make a quick stop by Lake Champlain to see the water. Everyone was pretty jazzed up on the bus ride home. About 10 minutes into our 4-hour ride Liz (Robertshaw) stood up to make an announcement. One thing led to another, we got to talking and all of a sudden she was sitting in the middle of the bus and we played the question game for the remainder of the trip. The question game entails all types of questions including but not limited to: what’s your favorite color, what would you want your last meal to be, what law would you change, etc. Yeah, there’s quite the range and some of the discussions got a little deep. How often do you get the opportunity to drill your head coach with questions like that? It was a lot of fun to say the least and after that I feel like I could easily answer one of those “how well do you know your friend” quizzes for about half the team.

This is one paragraph I actually have the butterflies writing but here it goes... next game is Senior Game *chills. A game I have very mixed emotions on. I certainly have not been looking forward to playing my last game on Nickerson; however, there is a certain excitement surrounding having myself and my three classmates celebrated for our careers here at BU. If I write anymore I will probably start tearing up in class (sorry Coach) so I will save the exciting traditions for next blog, giving you some funny stories to look forward to. Let’s leave it with this- you are promised some pictures of face-cake-stuffing activities.
