Hanover, N.H. - Needing a win to secure an Ivy League Playoff berth, Brown sophomore Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) scored five goals to lead the 10th-ranked Bears to a 17-8 win over Dartmouth. Brown’s win over the Big Green, coupled with Cornell’s 15-10 victory over Princeton, gives the Bears a share of the Ivy League Championship and the number one seed in the Ivy League Tournament which will be held at Brown’s Stevenson Field on May 1 and 3.
Brown finishes with an overall record of 12-3, 4-2 in the Ivy League, sharing the Ivy title with at least Princeton (4-2) and Cornell (4-2). Yale can also gain a share of the title with a win over Harvard later this afternoon. Dartmouth falls to 5-8, 1-5 Ivy with the loss.
The semifinal pairings for the Ivy league Tournament are also set, with Brown hosting Yale on Friday, May 1 at 8pm, preceded by Cornell vs. Princeton at 5pm. Both games will be televised on ESPN3. The Ivy Championship game will be held on Sunday, May 3 at Stevenson Field, starting at 12 noon on ESPNU.
With five goals and two assists, Molloy moved into second place in Brown single season goals, now with 58 goals for the season, passing the mark of 57 goals by Oliver Marti in 1992. He is just one goal short of Andy Towers’ all-time record of 59 goals in 1991.
Brown also a strong showing from junior Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD), who netted three goals, and juniors Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) and Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY), who netted two goals each.
Bears’ junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY), last week’s NCAA Defensive Player of the Week, was brilliant once again, making 10 of his 15 saves in the opening 30 minutes.
Dartmouth was paced by Jack Korzelius, Phil Hession and Adam Fishman, who scored two goals each.
Goals by Caputo and Molloy gave the Bears a 2-0 lead early in the opening quarter, but the Big Green came back to tie the game, 2-2, on scores by Korzelius and Hession midway through the quarter.
Blynn’s goal gave Brown the lead, 3-2, but Fishman quickly responded for Dartmouth to tie the game, 3-3.
Molloy’s goal with 2:37 remaining in the opening quarter gave Brown the lead for good, 4-3, after one quarter.
Brown’s defense held the Big Green scoreless in the second quarter, while its offense extended the Bears’ lead to 8-3 on goals by Caputo, Bellistri , sophomore AJ Lucchese (Sudbury, MA) and Molloy with 55 seconds left.
An evenly played third quarter had senior Tim Jacob, sophomore Alec Tulett (Toronto, Ontario), and Blynn score once each and Molly scoring twice to pull ahead, 13-7 after three quarters.
