Grip 'N Rip: Ryan Brown, Charlotte Hounds

Grip 'N Rip: Ryan Brown, Charlotte Hounds

Arguably one of the best shooters in the game, Ryan Brown has been devastating to defenses at every level. He is able to shred corners from the outside or beat you on the dodge. He is a Swiss army knife on attack and shows no mercy in the firing range.

What head and shaft are you using?

Right now I’m in figuring out which stick I’m going to use for the MLL season but this year during my college season I went between a stallion and Lakota. I used a Nike vapor shaft

Do you string your own sticks? If not, who does?

I do string my stick. I think it’s important to know how to string that way you can adjust your stick to exactly how you like it and don't have to rely on other people.

What kind of pocket are you using?

  • Mesh: I’m using the East Coast Hero mesh currently. It beaks in quick and has a great feel

  • Pocket placement: I use a high pocket typically.

  • Shooters: I either used two straights or one straight and a nylon this season. I have not decided if I’m going to make the switch back to U's or not for the MLL.

  • Whip: I use a lot of whip

How do you tape your sticks?

I usually tape up to a little over half the shaft and then put a small strip of tape at the top, under the head. I also like to make a small nob at the end of the stick for a butt end.

Why do you like this set up? (pocket and tape)

It’s what I’m comfortable with and I think that’s what’s most important in a stick. Just being able to use something you’re comfortable with and like.

You had to adjust to the 2013 NCAA shooting string rule, how did you go about it? Was it a hassle?

At first I thought it was going to be more of a hassle than it actually was but once I strung up a stick with the new rules it was completely fine. As long as you string a nice channel in your stick the mesh acts like a natural U. If anything I thought I was able to get more hold with a tighter channel and straight shooters.

Any superstitions or funny stories?

I don't have too many superstitions, I just make sure my tape never has any rips in it and doesn't lose its grip. Other than that I’m not too worried about it.

What is your wall ball and shooting routine?

I don't have a strict wall ball or shooting routine. My advice to younger players is when your going to work on your game make sure you do things that are realistic to your game. Don't take shots that you wouldn't normally take in a game

Who is your favorite super hero?

My favorite super hero is probably Captain America.
