Grip 'N Rip: Cory Dobyns

Each week Lacrosse Playground will be featuring a different lacrosse athlete as part of our “Grip ‘N Rip” series, where we’ll find out what the best use to fine tune their game. This week we are featuring Georgetown Prep Junior and University of Maryland commit, Cory Dobyns.
dux4-1

Cory Dobyns was one of the top scorers on the perennial power Georgetown Prep last year as a sophomore with 23 goals and 17 assists. The slick lefty attackman recently made a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland. It just keeps getting better and better for Dobyns doesn't it? Continue reading to see how he does it.

What head do you use?
I use an STX PROTON, the original. However I am getting an STX Professor because the Proton is not legal in college, so I am seeing which one fits me.

What handle do you use?
I use a NIKE VANDAL, gray with a navy blue swoosh.

Where does your pocket sit/what type of pocket to you prefer?
My pocket sits a little below the middle, to help with my hold but also get off a fast release.

Who is your stick doctor? Do you string it yourself or have a go-to-teammate/friend?
My stick doctor is my best friend, Brian Hack. I don't know what it is but I give him the credit when I score. He strings very well.

What kind of mesh do you use (Hard, soft, traditional/leathers, marc, etc.)? Why?
I start out with hard mesh, then the stick doctor and I put shaving cream on it and let it sit there to make it a hybrid between soft and hard. This really helps when it is raining but it also won't get ruined once played in the rain.

What is your preferred glove?
For school we use the K18, they are flexible and very comfortable. I highly recommend them.

How much whip does your stick have?
I have very little to no whip. Some players on my team play with so much, and I just don't understand how they can even pass.

Do you do anything unique to your head or shaft (pocket up-keep, tape jobs, alterations, etc.)?
I have had the same taping technique since middle school. My brother did it a particular way and I have kept it since. I usually tape my stick every 3-4 days and before every single game.

How long do you keep a stick before you get a new one?
I like to use a stick as long as possible. I usually get a new stick and they just pile up. If I am successful with one stick why change?

What’s most important to you in a stick/what makes a good stick?
I like wide heads because when I am inside it is easier to catch and release. I like a light but strong shaft. I always cut my shafts to the legal limit. I always use a silver shaft.
